Oh April, my birth month. Signs of spring, flowers pushing up through the ground, the crazy weather, more illness…
April was an enigma of sorts. Just when I started to feel like I was getting over pneumonia, I got strep throat – then passed it to two of the kids. Turns out pneumonia will just murder your immune system. No sooner was I off my antibiotics for one thing I was back on them for something new.
New Work
I did manage a couple of one off projects. Not sure if those will be returning but it would be nice. Mostly editing work which I love doing. Sometimes it’s just easier to make things shine brighter rather than create the flashlight yourself.
Existing Work
I’ve been in touch more with one of my e-commerce clients. It looks like we’ll be meeting again regularly soon as she’s ready to start learning more about Facebook and using it for marketing. Honestly, it will be nice to meet with her again. If not just for the regular work but for helping her into the next step of running her business.
Queries and LOIs
Five queries got sent out this month and five queries came back rejected. The best one didn’t even feel like a rejection. I got the sense that if it wasn’t for money, there would be space for me on her roster of writers. She was very encouraging and blamed the lack of space for me on the downturn of sales. I get that. Print publications are suffering and no one is immune.
Revenues
Again, the couple of one off projects and some work for my e-commerce client brought in a little extra this month. I’m thankful for it as I always am but I’m nowhere near where I’d like to be. I’m glad I don’t solely rely on the freelance anymore but that’s the goal for the end of this year.
Just for Me
I started work on some creative writing. It’s been a long time since I put pen to paper just for me but I began to get the whisperings of a story that needed told so I’m letting it run through me. It feels good to concentrate on something other than paid writing. Even off the blog sometimes feels better than on.
Results
While the marketing and pitching didn’t pay off, I’m still hopeful. I know this business well enough by now to know that things can change in an instant. I’m also hopeful that with warmer weather on the way I’ll be able to open my windows soon and let the germs out of my house. Heaven knows we’re due for some Spring here.
